Vintage Westclox Scotty Review

Welcome back to Tick n' Sip. Today, I will be doing a somewhat unusual review in terms of modern watches. Meet the Westclox Scotty.

These types of pocket watches, in particular, are referred to as "dollar pocket watches" because of their cheap price points and good reliability. Westclox at the time was one of the popular brands who had manufactured "dollar pocket watches" in mass quantities. In today's market, you can find these pocket watches on eBay or other websites from around $10 to about $100 dollars depending on its condition. These watches use the relatively basic mechanical movement 90001 from Westclox, featuring aluminum plates, a paper dial, and luminous hands and hour markers.

There is quite a bit of history that goes along with this particular pocket watch. My grandfather had worked for the Northern Pacific Railway for his entire 36-year career up until his retirement. During the middle of his career in the 1970's, he picked up this pocket watch to use in place of his beloved Hamilton Railway Special pocket watch to use as his daily beater. My grandfather loved this pocket watch and since his passing, it has been passed down to my father, who has passed it down to me within the last few years. Up until recently, the watch had issues where it would stop running occasionally. Within the last month, I decided to open up the case and give the movement a cleaning. Due to the nature of the riveted movement, it would be very hard to give the pocket watch a true servicing without an experienced watchmaker's help. I was, however, able to clean the watch with a simple oiling and it is now in great working condition. Overall, this pocket watch keeps great time and it is still very reliable to this day. This pocket watch might not hold much monetary value, but to my family, it is one of the timepieces that represents the kind, loving, and caring man who was my grandfather.
